- Queen Karnavati & Emperor Humayun — The Rajput queen sent a rakhi to Mughal Emperor Humayun seeking protection, and he honoured it by riding to her defence.
- Indra & Sachi — In Vedic tradition, the goddess Sachi tied a protective thread on Lord Indra's wrist before battle, blessing him with victory.

Across India, the day begins with a puja thali — adorned with a rakhi, roli (vermilion), chawal (rice), a diya, and mithai (sweets). The sister performs an aarti, applies tilak on her brother's forehead, ties the rakhi, and feeds him sweets. The brother gifts her something special in return — a token of his love and promise.
